President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday reiterated their commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women, underscoring the crucial role they play in shaping Pakistan’s future.

In their messages marking International Women’s Day, the two leaders emphasised the need to address the challenges faced by women, including gender discrimination, violence, and economic barriers.

They reaffirmed the government’s efforts in promoting women’s rights through policy interventions, legal reforms, and institutional support.

President Zardari, in his message, highlighted the resilience of women and their significant contributions to social development. “Societies that ensure equal rights and opportunities for women are more prosperous and peaceful,” he said, adding that Pakistan remains committed to upholding women’s rights in line with constitutional provisions and international obligations.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described women as the “builders of society” and the “pillars of homes,” noting that they are making strides in every sector—from classrooms to boardrooms and from fields to frontlines.

He stressed that empowering women is critical to Pakistan’s prosperity, stating, “When we invest in women’s education, health, and economic freedom, we uplift entire generations.”

The premier also referred to Islam’s emphasis on women’s dignity and rights, saying that the country must work collectively to create an inclusive society where women’s potential is fully realized.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘For all women and girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment’, serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to foster a society where women are given equal opportunities, he said.

Both the President and the Prime Minister urged continued efforts to enhance women’s security, education, and economic independence, asserting that the journey towards true gender equality must be taken forward.
